Dear Kids Avenue Families,
We are happy to introduce a new program into our daycare called Writer’s Workshop!
It is a student-centered framework for teaching writing that is based on the idea that students learn to write best when they write frequently, for extended periods of time, on topics of their own choosing. The program is designed around supporting children as they actively construct their own literacy learning.
The goal of these workshops is to prepare them to READ and WRITE independently.
Each Writer’s Workshop session is broken up into three segments:
The Mini-Lesson, Independent Writing/Conferencing, and Sharing. During the mini lessons, the educators discuss and model different aspects of writing such as directionality of text, print and book awareness, tracking print, writing approximations, and decoding words to spell them out. Afterwards the children have time to apply what they learned during the mini-lesson as they work on individual stories. While the children write, educators conference with the children to answer their questions or help them work through a challenge. At the end of the session, the children take turns sharing their work and discussing the progress they’ve made.
Writer’s workshop will be held once a week every Tuesday for children three years old and older starting September 14. It will be held in small groups of 5-6 children and will be a wonderful opportunity to encourage them to develop their love for telling stories as well as their early reading and writing skills!
Please let us know if you have any questions.
Thank you very much.
